British Ceramic Tile Factory Shop Newton Abbot

The closure of a British ceramic tile factory and shop has been called a “disaster” for Newton Abbott in a bid to save more than 300 jobs.

British Ceramic Tiles, which employs 380 people and has an 18-acre factory in Heathfield, closed on Wednesday with immediate effect, citing the recent loss of a significant customer contract in challenging market conditions.

One of the largest employers in the region, BCT has been in business for over 100 years and employs generations of families.

Only 67 employees remained at the plant when a notice issued at noon instructed employees to leave as the company, managed by FRP Advisory LLP, was being liquidated.

April Creswell, leader of Teignbridge Council and Bovey Tracey Borough Councillor, said: “Any job loss is terrible, but to lose 313 jobs in one go, with more to come, would be catastrophic. ”

“My wish is that another big company will step in and take it over.

This worker said: We need a lifeline for the workers. I can’t imagine how people are feeling and it’s not just the workers, it’s their families that are affected.

Founded in the 1800s, the company has seen significant investment in recent years and has become a leading company, producing lines for Laura Ashley, the V&A and Terence Conran, according to Cllr. Cresol.

The cottages at Haytor View in Heathfield were built around the factory, which was supplied by its own clay pits and more recently by Sibelco, formerly WBB, ball clay at Kingsteignton.

This is part of Bowie Tracy’s history.

He claimed to have been part of the Bowie Tracy saga for over a century.

The British ceramic tile company, located in Devon, is an ultra-modern and environmentally responsible manufacturer of ceramic or porcelain tiles. Since the Candy factory underwent a complete makeover in 1998, UK Ceramics has gone from strength to strength.

Because British Ceramics and Tiles has invested over £40 million in production equipment, we are now able to produce superior quality and exquisitely designed tiles that can be sold at affordable prices.

When we talk about perfecting anything, we don’t just mean fantastic production tiles that are beautifully designed and flawlessly crafted.

No matter what you decide, we’re sure to have something that not only looks amazing, but feels amazing, and you’ll absolutely love it!

The tiles for the walls and the tiles for the floor were made in England. Studio Conran and Laura Ashley were also present in this work.

The Devon neighborhood of Newton Abbot is home to UK business Tile & Ceramics Ltd. There are at least six other entries within a ten mile radius of the TQ12 postcode.

It is hoped that Devon’s economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic will be helped by a former British ceramic tile factory in Newton Abbot.

While the rest of the structure is being expensively restored, its iconic tower alongside the A38 has been removed.

When the company collapsed in 2019, 350 people lost their jobs, but developers claim the site is now attracting significant attention.

To meet the demand for construction and home improvement projects, the production line ran continuously.

However, the company went into administration without notice at the end of January after losing a “major customer contract”.

Former employee Steve Monk, who helped build the plant ten years earlier, oversaw its demolition.

“Part of me is very sad because I was involved in the construction of the factory and then the facility was operated and maintained for ten years, so we spent a lot of time maintaining the equipment that was there,” he says.

This area has now been largely removed and is now known as Power Park. It has a long history as an industrial site starting in the 1850s.

It was one of the largest factories of its kind in Europe and an ideal location for the manufacture of ceramic products with a ready supply of English porcelain clay nearby.

There is optimism that production will return to an area that once produced up to five million square meters of tile per year.

Gregory Distribution uses a quarter of the structure for warehousing, while the remaining space can be divided into three lots for sales.

Tim Weston of JLL Property Services said: “The site is ready to occupy, and to see the jobs that were tragically lost here brought back as quickly as possible.

In addition, negotiations are underway for another developer to take over the site. It is hoped that the next chapter in the site’s history will begin soon.
